How many times is the word “Qur’an” mentioned in the Holy Qur’an?

The word “Qur’an”, in its various forms, is repeated more than 60 times in the verses of the Qur’an, each time with a specific message. However, in all cases, the word does not necessarily refer to the divine book. For example, it appears twice in verse 78 of Surah Al-Isra, where it does not mean the Book of God, but rather refers to the early time of the dawn prayer — the break of dawn.

1. Surah al-Baqarah, verse 185: ﴾شَهْرُ رَمَضانَ الَّذی أُنْزِلَ فیهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدیً لِلنَّاسِ وَ بَیِّناتٍ مِنَ الْهُدی وَ الْفُرْقانِ …؛ The month of Ramadan is that in which the Qur’an was revealed as guidance for people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion…﴿
2. Surah an-Nisa, verse 82: ﴾أَ فَلا یَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ وَ لَوْ کانَ مِنْ عِنْدِ غَیْرِ اللَّهِ لَوَجَدُوا فیهِ اخْتِلافاً کَثیراً؛ Do they not then reflect upon the Qur’an? Had it been from other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction.﴿

Surah al-Ma’idah, verse 101: ﴾یا أَیُّهَا الَّذینَ آمَنُوا لا تَسْئَلُوا عَنْ أَشْیاءَ إِنْ تُبْدَ لَکُمْ تَسُؤْکُمْ …؛ O you who have believed, do not ask about things which, if they are shown to you, will distress you. But if you ask about them while the Qur’an is being revealed, they will be made clear to you…﴿
4. Surah al-An’am, verse 19: ﴾أُوحِیَ إِلَیَّ هذَا الْقُرْآنُ لِأُنْذِرَکُمْ بِهِ وَ مَنْ بَلَغَ …؛ This Qur’an has been revealed to me so that I may warn you and whoever it reaches…﴿
5. Surah al-A’raf, verse 204: ﴾وَ إِذا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَ أَنْصِتُوا …؛ When the Qur’an is recited, listen to it and be silent, so that you may receive mercy.﴿
6. Surah at-Tawbah, verse 111: ﴾وَعْداً عَلَیْهِ حَقًّا فِی التَّوْراه وَ الْإِنْجیلِ وَ الْقُرْآنِ …؛ It is a true promise binding upon Him in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur’an…﴿
7. Surah Yunus, verse 37: ﴾وَ ما کانَ هذَا الْقُرْآنُ أَنْ یُفْتَری مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ …؛ And it was not possible for this Qur’an to be produced by other than Allah…﴿
8. Surah Yusuf, verse 3: ﴾نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَیْکَ أَحْسَنَ الْقَصَصِ بِما أَوْحَیْنا إِلَیْکَ هذَا الْقُرْآنَ …؛ We relate to you the best of stories through what We have revealed to you of this Qur’an…﴿
9. Surah al-Hijr, verse 87: ﴾وَ لَقَدْ آتَیْناکَ سَبْعاً مِنَ الْمَثانی وَ الْقُرْآنَ الْعَظیمَ؛ And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the oft-repeated [verses] and the great Qur’an.﴿
10. Surah al-Hijr, verse 91: ﴾الَّذینَ جَعَلُوا الْقُرْآنَ عِضینَ؛ Those who made the Qur’an into portions [by accepting some parts and rejecting others].﴿

1. Surah an-Nahl, verse 98: ﴾فَإِذا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّیْطانِ الرَّجیمِ؛ So when you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the expelled one.﴿

7. Surah al-Isra, verse 89: ﴾وَ لَقَدْ صَرَّفْنا لِلنَّاسِ فی هذَا الْقُرْآنِ مِنْ کُلِّ مَثَلٍ …؛ And We have certainly diversified for mankind in this Qur’an from every [kind of] example…﴿
